- Layers, layers, layers! The summer temperatures in Greenland can be quite cool, but, with the sun shining fiercely, you can end up feeling warm. So, when packing, think layers…t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, and sweaters. You’ll be glad to have layers to peel off after you’ve walked up and down the hilly roads in that bright sun. When planning your outfits, remember that you’ll likely be participating in outdoor activities, so bring comfortable clothes. You won’t have much of a need for dressy clothes, so leave those at home.
- Thermal underwear. While you most likely won’t need to wear them every day, they will come in handy if you’re doing any boating activities. Personally, I love fleece lined thermals.
- Waterproof jacket. With the luggage weight restrictions flying into Greenland, you don’t want to be hauling around multiple jackets. A waterproof jacket will have you covered on both sunny and rainy days. I LOVE Ride Outerwear jackets so much so that I own three!
- Winter hat and scarf. Again, these will come in most handy on boating adventures, but you may also find them useful when hiking.
- Hiking boots. You’ll want these to be comfortable and waterproof.
- Sleep mask. You’ve heard of the midnight sun, right? Well, while in Ilulissat in the summer, it’s bright even at night. If you need it to be dark to fall asleep, then a sleep mask is a must.
- Sunglasses & sunscreen. See #6. The sun can be quite fierce at times, so you’ll want to protect your eyes and your skin.
- Bug spray. The mosquitoes in Ilulissat are INSANE! Seriously, those little buggers are everywhere. Keep in mind…we live in Louisiana in the U.S. We deal with mosquitoes every summer, but it’s rare even for us to have that many swarming around us at once.
- Wi-Fi device. Whether you rent a Wi-Fi device or get a data plan through your phone carrier, you’ll be thankful. Yes, you’re here to relax and get away from the stress of work and home, but you’ll still want access to GPS and Google search. Wi-Fi access is not free at hotels or restaurants, so be prepared to pay a good bit if you don’t bring your own.
